Born in Blackheath, London, in October 1938, Anne was diagnosed with tuberculosis as a child. At eight, she was sent to live with a foster family in the Bahamas in hopes that a warmer climate would save her life. By age 10, she had missed three years of formal education. Fortunately her mother had taught her to read and write by the time she was four, so she was able to catch up. Perry never wanted to do anything but write, yet it wasn’t until her late thirties that she finally saw publication with The Cater Street Hangman (1979). As she says on her website, she loves writing Victorian mysteries for the characters, the period’s contrast between glamour and squalor and the immense energy of the time. A member of the Church of Latter Day Saints, Perry lives in Portmahomack, Scotland, with two cats.
