Archaeoastronomy is the study of ancient man's view of the cosmos. Its very name implies that such a field of inquiry is interdisciplinary. To know what the ancient Maya thought about the heavens we must understand both the workings of the celestial sphere and the Maya mind. Religion, astrology, architecture, and the structure of the ceremonial center, hieroglyphic writing, and mathematics—all are involved and integrated into the Maya 'cosmovision' in a way we can begin to comprehend only when we divest ourselves of our own western cultural presuppositions.
-Anthony Aveni, Contemporary Authors, Vol. 81-84

The need to conduct a search for extraterrestrial intelligence sometimes seems like a sort of religious and scientific compulsion. But can we expect that aliens would really want to communicate with us if they did, in fact, have the technological capacity? Is galactic outreach a property of all sophisticated life forms, or is it our own aberrant desire?
-Anthony Aveni, New York Times Book Review, October 11, 1992

He writes with a mastery and polish that is wonderfully accessible, akin to an engaging classroom lecture.
