Today, as alarming antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” are on the rise and doctors are advising people to use pharmaceutical antibiotics for only the most serious infections, we need sound information on herbal alternatives to standard antibiotics.
Stephen Harrod Buhner—award-winning author of 15 books on nature, the environment and herbal medicine—has responded to this need for reliable, up-to-date information with this completely revised and updated second edition of his bestselling classic, Herbal Antibiotics.
This indispensable reference—over three times the size of the original book—features new material on viruses, infections, bacterial resistance and much more. It examines the roots of antibiotic resistance and the value of herbal treatments, and provides in-depth profiles of 30 common and lesser-known herbs. For each one, its antibiotic properties, treatment approaches, collection, preparation, dosage, potential side effects, contraindications and alternatives are discussed. An expanded section on emerging viruses has information that, to date, hasn’t been addressed elsewhere.
This one-of-a-kind reference will be an important guide to wellness for years to come.

This book is absolutely amazing. It's painstakingly researched with excellent citations but I like the fact that the author still 'talks' to the reader with an accessible, down-to-earth tone. He doesn't 'dumb anything down' (though I hate that expression), but doesn't sound like a pompous, jargon-spewing machine either. I'm already looking for the main herbs he discusses so that I can add them to my medicine cabinet and be ready for the autumn/winter (my first back in the northern Hemisphere in quite a few years).
His emphasis on the exact preparation requirements (in order of decreasing efficacy for different procedures) is also very very appreciated. Many authors don't often go into such detail and as any chemist can tell you- preparation is extremely important, so rest assured that you will not be disappointed on that front. This is definitely not one of those "such great information, but I wish he gave more detailed information on HOW I can really go about using these plants" book!!
He gives so much detailed info (including explanations of why, for example, you should add a bit of vinegar to some tinctures when you begin the extraction) that it will help you to feel confident that you're 'doing it right'. When talking about our health, this is incredibly important!! It can help us to get out of the mindset that says: "well- I'll use herbs and natural treatments when I'm not REALLY sick, but of course I'll go to the doctor and get 'real' medicine if I have something serious". Believe me- after reading this book, you will be thinking the OPPOSITE!
I'm also already thinking of all the people I know who will love getting this for the holidays! This book is a must-have for anyone even remotely interested in natural medicine. I can't say enough about it.
