Ordinary people have two basic choices in the face of indifference, and the other enemies that plague us: we can do nothing or we can do something. Either choice has consequences, of course. Doing nothing empowers apathy, indifference, racism and so on. It certainly empowers those civic, religious and political leaders whose priority is other than the well-being of their constituency.

Leaders are only a small part of any society, but what they say and do commands widespread attention. In comparison, the everyday actions of ordinary individuals receive little or no attention. Nevertheless, it is these ordinary people who influence family and community more than most leaders can. When a couple distributes food and blankets to homeless people, their unheralded act of compassion is far and away more powerful than the indifferent platitudes on the “homeless problem” uttered by politicians. And when ordinary people take it upon themselves to hold their leaders accountable for their actions and inactions, then there is potential for more widespread change. Those who know and understand their enemies, and are willing to do what it takes to defeat them, can rightfully expect their leaders to do the same.”
