Beyond the Homestretch takes us into the world of horseracing, with its colorful horses, jockeys, trainers and gallop girls, depicting the insights horses and other animals offer when we reevaluate our relationship with them.
In 2004, Lynn Reardon quit her job and opened the Texas racehorse adoption ranch LOPE (LoneStar Outreach to Place Ex-Racers). Although now the director of this organization that has saved over 600 thoroughbreds from the slaughterhouse, Lynn didn’t learn to ride until she was an adult. Horses like Tawakoni, the son of a Kentucky Derby winner, and Endofthestorm, the speedy bay who required an emergency tracheotomy, give her and her readers a fascinating apprenticeship in facing fear and creating a new life.

What a wonderful book. There aren't many people who've really earned the title "hero", but Lynn Reardon is one of them. A living example of "feel the fear (or nausea, or clumsiness, or self-doubt) and do it anyway." Though if you read the
book, you'll see that she'd never agree with that assessment. Quite self-effacing, she makes the horses the stars, and you'll love them all. My personal favorite was Sugarfoot, a misfit with an innate talent for being a therapeutic riding
horse. You'll laugh, you may cry tears of joy (as I did with Sugarfoot), and you'll come away with a much greater understanding and appreciation for horses and the people who love them.
I enjoyed every single page of this book and was sad to get to the last page - did I say that Lynn is quite a good writer too?
I hope she writes another book. Don't miss this one.
