Catalyst

From the team of Anne McCaffrey, bestselling author of the Dragonriders of Pern series, and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Nebula Award-winning author of The Healer’s War, comes the first book of an exciting new series that’s sure to please cat-lovers and science fiction fans alike!

Thomas’ Duchess—or Chessie, to those who love and depend on her services—is no ordinary feline. She’s a purebred Barque Cat, one of an invaluable breed trained to patrol the tight areas of spaceships, sniffing out oxygen leaks and other hazards. They’re so highly prized that every ship is required to bear a sign notifying rescue teams of their presence on board. But now the Galactic Health Authority has discovered an epidemic that will mean the impounding and possible destruction of animals across the galaxy—Barque Cats included. And Chessie and her kitten, two young people, and a mysterious cat with a hidden agenda are all that stand between the animals and total destruction....

Ever since Anne McCaffrey’s “psi”-fi novels, Rowan and Damia, fans have been eager to learn more about the remarkable Barque Cats. Now Catalyst reveals their story amid a lively space adventure only the masters of Pern and Petaybee could tell!

Not for Me
July 14, 2010

I am a cat lover, and though not a fan of the Pern books am at least aware of the legacy Anne McCaffrey has created with her Pern work. So this seemed like a pretty safe order. I was hoping for something like a Heinlein juvenile, and would have been happy with something a little short of that high standard, but we didn't even get there, and I'm gonna have to chalk it up to a failed experiment. The book appeared to be written for an audience of 16-year old girls. There's not really anything wrong with that, but since I'm a 45-year old male, the story and more importantly the approach wasn't really resonating.

Whimsical, not too intellectually challenging

A great book for cat ladies (and gentlemen), but a little too anthropomorphized and "cute" for the cat-neutral reader.

Definitely for young readers or the young at heart. With that said, it does provide an interface between what all cat lovers know; cats can understand us and find ways to communicate their thoughts, moods and desires. I look forward to the additional books hoping for mutual coexistence rather than domination of one over another.

Not up to her usual standard

I found the characters in this story to be shallow and not well developed. The action seemed forced and the plot line implausible (and I read a lot of fantasy). Overall, I would not recommend this book, or do I plan to continue with this series. It was a disappointment as I have read many of Ann's prior books and enjoyed them thoroughly.

They've done it again. I only have one complaint about the whole thing, Why do I have to wait for the rest of the story. The book was great but I hate waiting to finish the story. So, ladies, I'll be waiting in line for Catacombs.
